What are Whole Foods?
I recently met someone that was told by their doctor that they needed to eat more whole foods. The problem was.. they didn’t even know what that meant. This made me wonder if others are being told the same thing by their doctors but have no idea what it means to eat whole foods or even what they are?
The simple answer is: Whole foods are foods that are in their original state. They have not been processed or changed. They can be fresh or frozen and still be considered a whole food. Also, there are a few that have been minimally processed… wheat flour for example. Wheat berries are ground into wheat flour, however, this is still considered a whole food.
Try these Whole Foods:
- Fresh Fruits
- Fresh Vegetables
- Raw Nuts & Seeds
- Oats
- Brown Rice
- Barley
- Dry Beans & Lentils
- Quinoa
- Fish
- Eggs
Pick up some fresh organic fruits and vegetables from your local farmers market or co-op if possible. Try an apple and some nuts for a simple afternoon snack. Start your day with oatmeal with some seeds (chia, flax, and hemp Hearts) sprinkled on top. Snack on super convenient nuts and seeds. They will help keep you full longer and are full of good healthy fats for your brain.
Whole foods help provide our body with the nutrition it needs and give our body the energy it needs to get through the day. Eating whole foods helps improve our immune system and create wellness. Whole Foods can even promote healing within the body. This alone should inspire us all to add whole foods to our daily diet.
