Once you start making kefir you are going to need a creative way to drink all of it! Kefir tends to be a bit sour and although some people can drink it plain, I am not one of them. Which is why I created this Easy Kefir Fruit Smoothie! It’s my favorite way to drink kefir every day. This all natural, whole food, fruit smoothie is naturally sweet and delicious without any added sugar.
Plus, it contains some additional health benefits from the added nuts, seeds, spinach, frozen berries, and even a sprinkle of beet powder for circulation. Give this easy creamy fruit kefir smoothie a try!
It all starts with a cup of fresh homemade organic kefir. If you haven’t starting making your own, now is the time to start! These smoothies alone are worth the effort of making homemade kefir. Once you pour the kefir in the blender container, add some nuts, seeds, spinach, beet powder, a banana, and some frozen berries (no ice required). My favorite smoothie recipe is provided below. Feel free to get creative and make any alterations you like. Try experimenting with different nuts, seeds, and fruits. Afterall, its a smoothie!
To start, add 1 cup of cold organic kefir to your blender container. I have tried adding the fruit first or the nuts and seeds, however, I found the most effective way to start is with the liquid (kefir). Kefir has so many health benefits. For one, it is a fermented food so it is great for digestion. It is also a great pro-biotic and may even help with seasonal allergies. For more information about kefir click here.
Why use Kefir in a smoothie? Kefir is a fermented food, rich in powerful probiotics, that aid in colonizing beneficial bacteria in your intestinal tract. It improves gut health (the microbiome) which in turn also improves your brain, digestive tract, and immune system. Helping to promote overall wellness. If you haven’t starting making your own yet, feel free to use store bought Organic Plain Kefir. Make sure you stay away from flavored versions though. They contain too much sugar and other additives.
Instead of protein powder I add raw organic nuts and seeds. Drop raw organic almonds into the kefir and then flax, chia, and hemp hearts. The nuts and seeds in this recipe add about 7 grams of protein to the kefir smoothie.
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Try adding walnuts, pumpkin, and/or sunflower seeds. Use nuts and seeds that you like. All of them have different health benefits so have fun with this and use your creativity to make your own smoothie creation.
Next, add a scoop of beet powder, if not for any other reason, just for the color! Adding 1 scoop of beet powder makes the color of the blueberries pop and completely hides the green spinach color. On top of the amazing color the beet powder adds to your smoothie, you are also getting a little more calcium, iron, and potassium. Beets are rich in folate which is great for heart health. The manganese in beets is beneficial to brain function, metabolism, and even bone health. Beets also contain the mineral copper which is a good energy producer.
Beets have been shown to help reduce blood pressure. It is also possible that they help fight inflammation. And finally, since they are a good source of fiber, they are great for digestion as well. After discovering that most Organic Beet Powder is made overseas, not to mention super expensive, I started making my own. I will post my recipe soon! Its easy to make from fresh organic beets:)
After the beet powder, its time to add a handful of fresh organic spinach on top of the nuts and seeds. Spinach contains iron, vitamin c & k, potassium, and magnesium. It also aids in digestion and can help support the immune system.
Slice one organic banana and place it to top of the spinach in the blender container. Banana’s contain potassium, fiber which also helps with digestion, are a great source of beneficial nutrients, and are heart healthy.
As for the frozen organic berries, try a combo of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. The frozen fruit makes the smoothie so thick and creamy. Plus, there is no ice required. If you are someone who doesn’t like seeds in your smoothie, use frozen organic sliced strawberries instead of the raspberries.
Next, add frozen organic blueberries, after all, they are a superfood! The health benefits of blueberries are amazing and the flavor compliments the kefir perfectly. Blueberries are one of the top antioxidants posing many benefits and may help lower blood pressure, decrease the risk of heart disease, and help maintain the brain function too.
Ok, back to the smoothie recipe… Blend until smooth. Drink before a meal or post workout for the most benefits. This smoothie is quite filling so if you drink it before a meal, like dinner, you may not be able to eat as much as you normally would.
Last but not least my favorite smoothie recipe! I hope this sparks your creativity and you will come up with your own smoothie version using your favorite raw nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. Remember to always choose organic… it matters! Enjoy~
Easy Kefir Fruit Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup Fresh Organic Kefir
- 10 Whole Raw Organic Almonds
- 1 tsp Organic Chia Seeds
- 1 tsp Organic Hemp Hearts
- 1 tsp Organic Flax (seeds or meal)
- 1 handful Organic Fresh Spinach
- 1 Organic Banana (sliced)
- 1 scoop Organic Beet Powder
- 1/2 cup Frozen Organic Sliced Strawberries or Raspberries
- 1/2 cup Frozen Organic Blueberries
Instructions
- Add fresh kefir to a high speed blender container. I have used both the Vitamix and Ninja. Both work well.
- Add the organic almonds.
- Add the organic seeds… chia, hemp hearts, and flax.
- One handful of fresh organic spinach
- Slice 1 banana and add it on top of the organic spinach.
- Add 1 scoop of beet powder, which makes the smoothie a purple/pink color and disguises all the green spinach!
- Lastly add the organic frozen berries. Use strawberries if you prefer a less seedy smoothie. Or a combo of all 3 berries. Blend until smooth. Should take 1 minute or less depending on your blender. Enjoy!
Notes
Remember to be creative with your food. It doesn’t have to be complicated and there is inspiration all around you. If you haven’t tried kefir in a smoothie, what are you waiting for?
